Open Horizon Smart Agriculture SIG

Core Beliefs

  • With sufficient sensors and data, you should be able to apply the optimum resources to grow crops to their maximum yield.

  • You should not need chemical fertilizers and pest control to grow healthy crops (whenever possible)

  • Potential harm to crops can be caught earlier, and with less impact to yield, through intensive imaging and analytics (24hr farming).

  • You can prevent harm to, and improve the well-being of, livestock with fewer manual interventions through judicious monitoring and analytics.

  • Local analytics can respond more quickly, and with less expense, than cloud-based analytics, especially in areas with little to no internet connectivity.

Liquid Prep integration

playground

Connect Liquid Prep sensor to containerized workload deployed by Open Horizon and enable standardized data collection northbound and model deployment southbound for better decision support in small & large farmsteads.

OPEN projects

George & playground

Support OPEN's efforts to educate future farmers, and agriculture students and teachers, and experts to integrate inexpensive IoT LoRaWAN and related edge computing technologies into decision-making. The goals being:

To improve crop yields (ensuring food security in climate impacted regions), to better monitor local environments including CO2 data, to improve water banking, and share knowledge among all stakeholders by deploying and managing local analytics with Open Horizon.  OPEN Horizon will connect sensors to OPEN's remote sensor networks through edge devices, distribute data and models, and help train current and future farmers, primary-secondary students and teachers, university of agriculture faculty and students, and ministry and professional agriculture experts, and partner developers of OPEN.

  • Projects running in Africa and Jamaica, haven't tied back to SmartAG processes yet.

  • Sensors for their projects (SEEED-based), in Jamaica are deployed and soon in Bungoma, West Kenya and Liberia as well, and are all intended to be use cases for the SmartAG framework.

  • Exploring educational material creation to use SDK (including Open Horizon) in university and professional settings.

  • Mabanga, Kenya dashboard

  • Custom development provided by expeer

  • All other code to be contributed to Open Horizon Services - @Jeff Lu reviewing.

  • Entering pilot rollout phase, expanding supported sensors

  • Added Samsung industrial devices as a supported deployment target

  • Project extended until December 2024

  • 2023-08-08: Bridge-based water depth sensor deployed, sending data to Hof Box.
